It’s been suggested that the introduction of photography to the magazine industry is what caused the demise for the Golden Age of Illustration. Well, maybe not, because there are still some among us who have carried the tradition on what good illustration is.

For more than five decades Sergio Martinez has carried the torch unnoticed and probably unappreciated. But for those who know, will tell you, he is from the “Old School of Illustration.” Through all of Sergio’s years, he has remained true to his art. In spite of all the changes in the field of illustration he has never been swayed or deterred from what he believes good art is. To compromise was not an option.

A true artist does not simply draw or paint with his pen or brush but rather, with his heart.

Sergio has had an international career in Mexico, the United States, as well as inEurope. Born in Orizaba Ver, Mexico, he received his art training at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. His first art work was commissioned by the Librerie Hachete inParisin 1973 and he soon branched out illustrating for books and advertising clients in France, Switzerland, Spain, Central and South America. He also did a lot of work for BBC and many American publishers, including Signet, New American Library, Disney Press, New York, the Reader’s Digest and Elfin Light Press. His work has also been widely exhibited in Europe and Mexico City with several appearances exhibitions at the Society of Illustrators, New York City.

Although trained classically to use the standard mediums. Martinez has evolved a personal technique that is his hallmark and which enables him to attain a glowing luminicity. The originals are rendered on a transparent vellum in wax crayons and colored pencil, working on both the front and underside, dissolving the charcoal pencil or crayon into tone by means of turpenoid. The effect is similar to a Maxfiels Parrish glaze but by entirely different means. His working method is detailed in Step-by-Step Graphics cover story, in the January/February 1996 issue.

If the old adage that there is no bad pen for a good writer holds true then I imagine it applies just as well with artists. This came to mind while going through some of my old comic books from the Philippines. No one can help but be amazed at how beautiful some of the drawings that were produced with a cheap Chinese bamboo brush by the artists.

Not too long after the Second World War ended in the pacific, the Philippines started producing comic books. Apart from a few movie theaters that cropped up around the country the Filipino comic books were the source of entertainment for the masses.
And from within the confines of those few comic book publishers came a band of artists to be recognized years later as the Golden Age of the Philippine comics. The names of the artists who started it all is endurably etched for that period. Francisco V. Coching, Nestor Redondo, Alfredo P. Alcala, Tony de Zuñida, Elpidio Torres, Clodualdo del Mundo, Noly Panaligan, Jesse F. Santos Ruben N. Yandoc Fred Alcantara, Jim Fernandez, Federico C. Javinal, Tony Caravana, Teny Henson and others.
